Alt text is what a screen reader reads aloud in place of an image, so someone who can’t see it knows what’s there. Every important image on your website should have it, and it should describe what other visitors can see for themselves.
Alt text has always done a second job. Search engines read it to work out what an image shows and what the page around it is about, so a good description helps people find your work. Now AI tools read it too, when they summarize pages and answer questions about them.
AI can now write better descriptions than most of us manage on our own—for someone using a screen reader, and for search engines and AI tools—in a fraction of the time. Many people have found alt text tedious to write, or weren’t sure how to do it well, and so often left it out.
In this workshop we’ll look at:
- what makes a good description, for each of those two jobs
- how to ask AI for one, and what to give it to work from
- how to check what it writes before you use it
- where the alt text goes on your website
Join with your website open and logged in and we’ll work on images from it together.
